Immunotoxicology

The functions of the immune system are to protect the body from invading infectious agents and to provide immune surveillance against arising tumour cells. It has a first line of defence that is non-specific and that can initiate effector reactions itself, and an acquired specific branch, in which lymphocytes and antibodies carry the specificity of recognition and subsequent reactivity towards the antigen. Immunotoxicology has been defined as the discipline concerned with the study of the events that can lead to undesired effects as a result of interaction of xenobiotics with the immune system.
